Do You Know the Rules?

Dave Kraft, Heritage Palms golf rules columnist

I was looking through the Rule book and I found this new Rule from 2023. I thought it would be a good idea to share it with everyone.

You are playing a hole and your ball comes to rest against a movable obstruction, such as a rake or a trash can. The first thing you need to do is mark the spot of your ball before removing the obstruction. This is done just in case your ball moves when removing the obstruction, and you know exactly where to replace the ball if it does move. As you remove the obstruction your ball moves. When you pick up the ball to replace it to its original spot you notice mud on the ball. Are you allowed to clean the ball?

RULE 14.1C/2 WHEN A MOVED BALL MAY BE CLEANED

If a player’s ball has come to rest against a movable obstruction, and the ball moves when the movable obstruction is removed, the player is required to replace the ball on the original spot. (Rule 15.2a(1)) and may clean the ball before doing so. (New)

Here is this month’s golf etiquette tip. For your safety, when the golf cart is moving all legs must be in the golf cart.
