BACKPACKS
On April 2, three of the ladies from the HP Blankets of Love group delivered 51 fabric tote bags, with 2 pockets each, and 15 fabric backpacks to the Ray V. Pottorf Elementary School. The school is located just outside our Winkler gate. Judy Kent, a member of our group, learned from their principal that many students who are in the foster care system are sometimes moved to another home. They have nothing to help move their belongings. The principal suggested tote bags would be a big help. In addition, she mentioned many students didn’t have backpacks.
We decided this was a perfect project for our group. We eagerly worked on sewing these items for five or so weeks. About seven of us sewed on our sewing machines, and many more helped cut fabric or straps, pressed, or did the occasional ripping out of sewing mistakes. It was truly a team effort. Virtually all of the fabric used for this project was generously donated.
Blankets of Love meets every Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Activity Center’s card room. We regularly make quilts, crocheted or knitted blankets, and other items of need for various charities. Please join us any Thursday, November through April.
