November is a month for remembering our Veterans and troops. Thank you for serving with honor and dedication! Speaking of Veterans, you’ll see an article I wrote three years ago which has an historic timeline of World War II. It’s aptly titled Interesting World War II Facts, and you’ll find it on page 44.
The bottom line?
“World War II was the largest single event in the history of mankind. It was fought on six of seven continents and all the seas. Fifty million died. It was an event of such magnitude that it took 50 years to come to grips with it, to get perspective on it. When people came back from the war, they were desperate to put behind them. Now they’re in the mortality zone. They’re looking back and saying ‘Whatever else I did in my life, I did that. I had a part in something that was larger than our ability to understand it.’” John Keegan, British Historian

Wow, it was ten years ago this month that I became editor of Between the Palms! I took over from Linda Harvey, who filled that role for some ten years before me.
In my November, 2016 Staying Connected column, I wrote the following: “Recruiting for help now! Should anyone out there feel they have good writing skills and would like to ‘belly up to the bar’ and try his/her hand on composing an article or two for BTP, please get in touch with me. We have tons of talent in this community and I’d love to tap some of it!” This statement still holds true. Are there any future writers lurking out there?

HP resident, Keith Bauer, is a neuropsychologist who evaluates patients to determine if they have Dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. He was kind enough to write an article on this sensitive subject. Please see Diagnosing Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease on page 18.
According to the Alzheimer’s Association, there are 7.4 million people 65 or older with clinical Alzheimer’s Dementia in the USA in 2026. Unlike normal aging, dementia is a progressive condition that significantly impacts memory, thinking, and daily functioning, fundamentally altering the lives of those affected and their families.

Thanks to all of you who have completed the Strategic Planning Committee’s Future Vision Survey. Now what? Please see Co-Chair Brian Walker’s Strategic Planning Process – Data Gathering Complete article on page 8 to find out.

Please check out Mark Carter’s excellent Between the Numbers article on page 12. His focus is on how HP strives to create a budget that delivers value to our members.

If you have an iPad, please consider reading your BTP issue on that device. The screen is larger, and far easier to read. Whether on your cell, iPad, or laptop, please know there’s an option for you to download this issue (or any prior issue) as a PDF (Adobe) for viewing, rather than using a web browser. It’s far easier to scroll down, page by page, to see photos, etc. close up. If you’re having any issues downloading or printing an issue, please contact seabreezecommunications.com for assistance. Anyone who needs help can get individual, one-on-one support.

Should you have an article to submit for the December issue, my deadline is November 3. Postcards are always welcome! Please email to [email protected].
