FINDING THE RIGHT FIT FOR YOUR GOLF GAME
The best coaching environment is the one that helps you learn, practice, and enjoy the game.
As we head into another busy golf season at Heritage Palms, many of us are thinking about ways to improve our game. Maybe you want to lower your handicap, become more consistent, gain confidence around the greens, or simply feel more comfortable when you step onto the first tee.
But before deciding what you need to improve, it can be helpful to consider how you learn best. There isn’t one right way to take a golf lesson. The best coaching environment is the one that matches your goals, personality, and learning style.
When One-on-One Coaching Makes Sense
Private instruction is a great choice when you want personalized attention, or have a specific part of your game you’d like to address.
Maybe your driver has become inconsistent, you’re struggling with your short game, or you aren’t sure why your ball flight has changed. One-on-one coaching allows us to look at your individual swing, and create a plan that makes sense for your game.
Private lessons can also be valuable when you’re not sure what the problem is. Sometimes golfers try to fix what they think is wrong, when the real issue is somewhere else. A good lesson should help you understand not only what to work on, but why.
The Benefits of Learning in a Group
For some golfers, learning alongside others is a better fit.
Small-group instruction creates an opportunity to learn from the instructor while also watching other golfers work through similar challenges. Seeing another player have a “lightbulb moment” can sometimes make a concept easier to understand in your own game.
Group programs also provide structure and accountability. You have a scheduled time to practice, a chance to ask questions, and an opportunity to build relationships with other golfers.
And perhaps most importantly, golf is supposed to be fun. Learning in a social environment can make improving your game feel less like work and more like another enjoyable part of the game.
Sometimes the Course Is the Best Classroom
Another option is a playing lesson.
Many golfers can hit the ball well on the range but find that their decisions change once they are on the course. That’s where playing instruction can be especially helpful.
A playing lesson can focus on things such as club selection, course management, pre-shot routine, trouble shots, short-game decisions and learning how to turn the skills you’ve practiced into better decisions on the course.
A Combination May Be Your Best Fit
You don’t necessarily have to choose just one approach.
A private lesson can help identify what you need to work on. A group clinic can provide an opportunity to practice and reinforce those skills. A playing lesson can then help you take them onto the course.
Think of it as a Process
Learn → Practice → Play → Adjust → Repeat.
That approach tends to be much more effective than simply trying to collect swing tips.
What’s Coming This Season at Heritage Palms
As we move into November and the heart of our golf season, there will be several opportunities at Heritage Palms to learn, practice, and enjoy the game with others.
Golf 101 will provide a welcoming, small-group environment for golfers who want to strengthen their fundamentals, build confidence, and better understand how the pieces of the game fit together.
Short Game School will take a closer look at one of the most important scoring areas in golf — the shots inside 100 yards. We’ll work on technique, distance control, shot selection, and developing more confidence around the green.
And, of course, private lessons and playing lessons will continue to be available for golfers looking for a more individualized approach.
Whether you’re a newer golfer looking for a place to start, an experienced player trying to shave a few strokes off your handicap, or someone who simply wants to enjoy golf a little more, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to improvement.
My goal is to help you find the type of coaching that fits your game, your goals, and your life — because when instruction feels approachable and relevant, improvement becomes a lot more enjoyable.
I look forward to seeing you on the course this season!
