The HP Book Club will meet on Friday, January 16, at 2:30 p.m., in the Activity Center to discuss The Woman They Could Not Silence by Kate Moore. This work of non-fiction is the story of Elizabeth Packard, a 19th century woman who was unjustly committed to an insane asylum by her husband, primarily because she disagreed openly with him about many issues of theology.
The book details her fight against the legal system which allowed her incarceration, and her leadership in a movement to expose inhumane conditions in these mental institutions. Her work led to significant legal and social reform. One reviewer praised the author for “her meticulous historical research and captivating storytelling.” I will lead the discussion.
Club meetings are open to all residents who read the book. If you wish to be added to the HP Book Club mailing list, please email me.
