CRC News: Can I Legally Turn Right on Red?

Yes, is the answer, EXCEPT, when there is a posted sign stating, “No Turn on Red.” In that case, you are required to stop your vehicle before the crosswalk and wait for the light to turn green.

In the absence of such a sign, a turn on red is legal on an arrow or solid red light when there is a safe gap in traffic. Proceed to turn right after stopping at the crosswalk and checking for pedestrians (both ways) in the crosswalk.
