In mid-December, Carol Borloff and I met with Ms. Green, the teacher for the Ray V. Pottorf Elementary School kindergarten class with which we were matched. The energetic teacher joyfully showed us around her classroom, and then we sat down to map out the projects that our book club/golf group can take on to assist her and her students. The first component will be to volunteer in the classroom for those of us who feel comfortable doing so.
I am in the process of being cleared to be a “classroom assistant.” Once cleared, I plan to volunteer about 1 1/2 hours weekly to assist with Language Arts activities which will be fully designed and set up by Ms. Green.
The second portion of our “adoption” project will be to host a Valentine’s Day party for the kindergarten classroom, including decorations, games, food, and a craft activity.
Finally, our third component will be to fund some of Ms. Green’s Amazon wish list. This list of items will serve as special activities for students who are adequately completing their work and behaving appropriately in the classroom. One example is a 4-foot Jenga set for the students to use when earned. Our group and Ms. Green are quite excited to get started with our collaboration! Stay tuned for next month’s update.
